Shifting from direct nutrition service provision to Government-led delivery in Sudan

The Irish Global Health Network Conference was held on 26th and 27th October 2022.

Concern in Sudan presented the project 'Shifting from direct nutrition service provision by Concern Sudan to Government lead delivery through empowerment' during the 'Human Resources for Health' session at the conference.

Concern Sudan is implementing a Health and Nutrition programme with the Ministry of Health in 4 localities in West Darfur: El Geneina, Kerenik, Jebel Moon and Kulbus, supported by Irish Aid and UNICEF.

Concern has been providing direct nutrition services for the management of malnutrition in Sudan since 2004. The nutrition programme in West Darfur and across the country was not fully integrated as part of the Ministry of Health Primary Health Care package mainly provided by humanitarian partners. The Concern Sudan team has been working closely with the West Darfur Ministry of Health in this project to ensure nutrition is incorporated as part of the primary health care package - led and owned by the Ministry of Health.

The major outcomes and lessons learned so far are:

• By providing supportive supervision, on the job training, and provision of essential supplies, quality standards can be maintained
• From January to August 2022, a total of 8,772 children with acute malnutrition have been treated through service provision of Ministry of Health staff.
