With Mother’s Day just around the corner, now is the perfect time to celebrate all the amazing women in the world who love and care for us selflessly.

If you’re looking for something a little different to the usual flowers and chocolate, check out our top Mother’s Day gifts that give back. Each gift will help transform a life and is a special way to show your mum that you care.

1. Plant a vegetable garden in your mum's name

Instead of giving your mum flowers, why not plant them for a family halfway around the world?

A Kitchen Garden is a super simple circular structure raised above the ground with an inner circular basket in the centre for compostable waste to be added. These little gardens can produce an array of vegetables and help families receive a nutritious diet. Think of it like your mam’s loved vegetable garden out back, only now it is in a country like Burundi. It’s a great way to show her that you care while helping a family in need and you’ll receive a special card to pass onto her. So swap the flowers for some seeds and watch the benefits grow.

2. Do a refreshing hike together in Donegal

Sign yourself and your mum up for a one-day fundraising hike in Donegal, a great way to take in some breath-taking scenery and have all the chats.

Join us from 13–14 April as we hike to Glencolumbkille via Sliabh Liag and by the one-mans-pass. No need to worry if you and your mum are not avid hikers either, this walk is suitable for people of all fitness levels, so just bring some walking shoes. It’s a great way to show your concern by supporting our work in some of the world’s poorest countries and catching up with your mum. To take part, we’re asking people to pay a €25 deposit and raise at least €100 but that’s a lot easier than it might sound.

3. Invest in a child's education in your mum's name

A good education is something all mothers want for their children and you can help give it not just to one, but five kids.

All children should be free to dream and aspire to be whatever they want to be and you can help by giving a child the best start. This gift could pay for the tuition fees of five children for an entire year. Your mam would be proud to see such a noble gesture carried out in her name and you will receive a special card to personalise. So why not help empower the youth of today and shape tomorrow’s future leaders.

4. Race the Vhi Women's Mini-Marathon together

Sign yourself and your mum up for this mini-marathon fundraising challenge and bond as you help empower women all over Ireland.

The Vhi Women’s Mini-Marathon is the biggest all-women’s event of its kind in the world. Each year in Dublin on 2 June, thousands of women come together to run, jog or walk the 10 kilometres for causes they believe in. You could be one of them. This is a great way to spend some quality time with your mum and set yourselves a new challenge. Registration is quick and easy, and you can even sign up as a group. All we ask is that you fundraise a minimum of €80 and spread the word to your friends and family.

Take part in the VHI Women's Mini Marathon this June and raise money to help the world's poorest people.

5. Voice your thoughts with Project Us

Join our Facebook group with your mum and release your inner activists!

Project Us is our movement for change in Ireland. It is a space for communities online and offline to gather to discuss the global and local issues that matter to us, that distress us, that enrage us. Join our Facebook group with your mum and keep an eye out for the next café conversation to share your thoughts on how we can combat global issues. We'll be exploring how issues at local level connect to the UN’s Global Goals
